FSG chief Mike Gordon reveals private Klopp talks which led to new contract and lauds ‘big statement’

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon has revealed that he had no doubts Jurgen Klopp would sign an extension after the early indications on his future.

Klopp signed a new deal on Thursday which will keep him at Anfield until the end of the 2025/26 season. The German’s previous contract expired in 2024 and he had long insisted that nine years would be enough on Merseyside.

However, he changed his tune in press conferences earlier this season. Indeed, he hinted that he would be open to an extension if the circumstances were right for the future.

As a result, Gordon travelled to Liverpool for talks with Klopp’s agent earlier this week.

The deal subsequently went through at speed and Klopp revealed his delight at extending his terms with the Reds.

Gordon, whose FSG own Liverpool, revealed that Klopp had also given hints on his future in private talks.

“Everything Jurgen has said publicly about his future previously was reflected by his words privately to us,” Gordon told Liverpool’s official website.

“It was about him having the inclination and desire to keep going. In this respect, it is clear he is more energised than ever.”

Gordon described Klopp as the “perfect figurehead” for Liverpool and lauded his strengths as a “leader”.

The Reds are still on course for a Carabao Cup, Champions League and FA Cup treble this season. They could yet make it a quadruple if Manchester City slip up in the Premier League title race.

Klopp’s success, which currently amounts to five major trophies, has come from several standout signings.

But, the manager outlined his desire to adapt his squad with more signings in the future. Gordon reflected the sentiment and insisted that Liverpool are in the perfect position to progress even further.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

“Jurgen wanting to make our future to be as bright as our present is a big statement,” Gordon said.

“We cannot rest or consolidate. We have to think at all times about improvement and we are now able to do this in the knowledge that we have retained a manager who not only shares our vision and ambition, he remains determined to deliver on it.

“For these reasons and many more, it is beyond thrilling to know Jurgen Klopp will lead us into this new era.”

Klopp and Liverpool have built up a fantastic track record of expert signings who fit the system perfectly.

January addition Luis Diaz has slotted in seamlessly on the left wing. He is following in the footsteps of Diogo Jota, who made an instant impact after his arrival from Wolves.

Liverpool eyeing unprecedented quadruple

The Reds moved a step closer to Champions League glory on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Villarreal.

The semi-final first-leg win gives them a big advantage going to Spain for next Tuesday’s second leg.

Meanwhile, Liverpool contest the FA Cup final against Chelsea on May 14.

The Reds beat the Blues in February’s Carabao Cup final.
