Klopp suggests Liverpool must go back to basics when explaining what he liked the most in Man City draw

Jurgen Klopp stated Liverpool were at their most threatening when keeping it simple, while captain Jordan Henderson dissected his side’s positives and negatives against Man City.

Liverpool twice fought back from behind to secure a vital point at the home of title rivals Manchester City. Both sides displayed their nerves early on and it was City who broke the deadlock within five minutes.

Diogo Jota took just eight minutes to cancel out Kevin De Bruyne’s deflected opener when tucking finishing off a move that included both full-backs.

City re-took the lead through the impressive Gabriel Jesus to ensure Liverpool went into the break 2-1 down.

However, it took just 47 seconds for Liverpool to draw level once again after the restart when Sadio Mane combined with Mohamed Salah before rifling past Ederson.

The draw leaves the title race finely balanced with the gap between the two sides remaining a single point.

PLAYER RATINGS: Liverpool fight back twice as Klopp selection pays off despite Man City star giving Reds ace nightmares

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match Klopp said: “What a game. Wild.

“Better start for City, but you can describe it a little bit like a boxing fight. Both arms down for a second and you get a massive knock.

“You can shake a little bit and then the next knock is coming from the other team.

“I liked a lot of things, when we played simple passes we were really dangerous and that’s how we scored the goals.

“It was a great game and the right result. The result we have to live with it, and can live with it.”

On what he said to his players at half-time: “We showed [our] goal because it was a really good football situation which if we did more we would have chances.

“I was convinced we could win this game. They were much more direct than us today. They had a more direct idea than us and we wanted to let them run when in possession.

“Defensively we were sometimes in a rush, they put us under pressure and we can defend these situations better.

“The second half was really intense, they needed breaks as well, but their counter attacks are not bad. Their decision making is really good and they always pick the right player.”

On the title race in general, Klopp added: “We will not stop chasing.

“That’s clear, but now we have two different competitions before we start the Premier League again – and then see who has the better finish.”

Henderson dissects Liverpool positives and negatives

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson also spoke to the press, telling Sky Sports: “It was an intense game which we knew it would be.

“We knew it would be tough but we wanted to give it everything and get the win. We couldn’t do that but we didn’t lose. It’s not the end of the world, we are still in the race, so positives and negatives.

“I think we started OK but we were a little hectic at times. Of course we knew we would come under pressure early on, they are a fantastic team. I felt we settled down a bit and caused them problems. It’s pleasing how we twice came from behind. We want to do better of course.

“You have to keep going, you have to be prepared to suffer. You have to stay positive, stay on the front foot and not give them time. It worked at times, at others we can defend better.”

Asked whether City will be happier with the points than Liverpool, Henderson added: “We’ll have to wait and see.

“They don’t drop many points, we know that. We have to concentrate on ourselves and win as many games as possible. If they slip up we have to be there right behind them. We’ll keep going until the end.”
