Pundit claims outstanding partnership forcing summer exit for Tottenham stalwart

Former Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson believes club stalwart Harry Winks will likely have no choice but to move on this summer after struggling for game time under Antonio Conte.

The 26-year-old England midfielder has seen his role under Conte almost completely diminish since Rodrigo Bentancur’s arrival from Juventus in the January transfer window.

Winks has watched on from the bench as Bentancur has formed an excellent partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in Tottenham’s engine room. Indeed, the midfielder has played just 17 minutes of Spurs’ last six league games.

And Robinson, who spent fours at Tottenham, thinks Winks will be forced out of the club.

He told Football Insider: “Hojbjerg and Bentancur are the preferred partnership.

“You always worry about players adapting when they come to the Premier League but Bentancur has settled in brilliantly. He’s been an excellent signing. He demands a starting spot every week. It is him plus one and at the moment it is Hojbjerg.

“Winks has found it hard to get into the team. It looks like the time has come for him to move on. He needs to be playing every week given the stage he is at in his career. He needs a manager who will show him a bit of love and play him every week.

“Hojbjerg and Bentancur are the first choice right now. Hojbjerg has not been consistent this season but he is playing really well at the moment. Bentancur is the one setting the bar.”

Winks’ playing time more and more limited

Winks‘ cause could be hurt even further in the remaining games of the season. Fellow midfielder Oliver Skipp is closing in on a return to action after being out since last January with a long-term pelvic injury.

Skipp suffered a slight setback that ruled him out of the win at Aston Villa. However. is still expected to be back soon and will almost certainly take Winks’ place on the bench.

In terms of summer suitors, Southampton and Crystal Palace have shown an interest in the player. Newcastle were also keen before they eventually landed Bruno Guimaraes in January.

Winks has made 199 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring just five times.
