Manager David Moyes felt West Ham should have dealt better with the Arsenal threat at corners after watching his side lose 2-1 to the Gunners.
The Hammers were undone by Rob Holding’s first Premier League goal and Gabriel Magalhaes’s second-half header. Jarrod Bowen ensured the sides went into the break all square. The forward bagged his ninth league goal of the campaign on the stroke of half-time after Holding headed home from Bukayo Saka’s 38th-minute corner.
And it was another set-piece that led to the north Londoners’ winner on 54 minutes. The East End outfit failed to clear a corner and Gabriel headed in Gabriel Martinelli’s cross.
The result means the London Stadium outfit remain in seventh spot in the table. Moyes felt they could have taken something from the game.
And he was unhappy with a couple of aspects of his charges display having made changes ahead of next week’s clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.
“I thought we had done well enough. We conceded a couple of set pieces which we are normally very good at, both attacking and defending,” he told BBC Sport.
“We also made a few changes which left out some of the bigger players who might have been involved in those situations. And we knew that was a risk and we got punished for it.
“We had a game Thursday, they didn’t, so we were entitled to a slow burning start.
“It came down to two simple things. We’d have liked to have not given the corner kicks away but when we did we could have defended them better.”
Moyes defends Bowen over dive
Bowen was booked for simulation during the second half. Aaron Ramsdale made it clear there was no contact when Bowen went to ground close to the Arsenal keeper.
The official agreed, prompting the Hammers man to shake hands with ref Mike Dean after he brandished a yellow card. And Moyes felt his player’s honesty had contributed to the booking.
“Then we had the incident when Jarrod gets through and maybe if Jarrod had trailed his leg like others do then maybe the situation of the whole game would have changed at that point,” he added.
“But he didn’t and I am glad he didn’t because he is an honest player and does so many good things.”
And the Scot is hoping that West Ham can turn things around to echo last season’s solid end to the campaign.
“We want to finish strongly, the reason we are in Europe because of our strong finish last year,” he said. “Today was an opportunity but another opportunity we have is a European second leg coming up.”
