‘The sad thing is he loves this club’; Chelsea end could be near for frustrated star

Christian Pulisic may be looking for a route out of Chelsea this summer after the star’s father hinted at the forward’s frustration.

The 23-year-old signed for the Blues in January 2019 but stayed on-loan with Borussia Dortmund for the rest of 2018-2019. He made his first-team debut for the west Londoners in August 2019, scoring his first goal for the club in October that year. Much was expected of the USA international but he has never been able to nail down a regular starting berth.

The Pennsylvanian enjoyed 19 starts among 25 Premier League outings in 2019-20, scoring nine goals. But he bagged only four from 18 starts and 27 appearances the following campaign.

Thomas Tuchel has only given him the nod on 10 occasions this term, with 19 appearances in the league. Pulisic has struggled with injury and Covid at times in 2021-2022.

He has found the net five times but is a regular scorer for his national side, notching 21 times in 48 appearances for the Stars and Stripes.

And he remains a vital part of Gregg Berhalter’s side. The American has played a part in 33 games in all competitions for Chelsea this season.

However, he has been placed on the bench far too many times for his liking. And, now back to full fitness, Tuchel continues to overlook him from the start of games.

And, following another substitute appearance in Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Everton, the player’s father took to Twitter to reveal his feelings.

“The sad thing is he loves this club, teammates, and London.… puts his heart and soul into being a pro,” tweeted Mark Pulisic. “Onwards and upwards my boy…big 6 months ahead.”

Pulisic victim of Chelsea success

Pulisic is under contract with the capital outfit until the summer of 2024. He is still young enough to enjoy a successful career away from Chelsea if things do not turn out his way in the next 12 months.

Having forked out £58m for the youngster, it seemed as though the Blues had big plans for the Hershey-born star. However, with such an array of attacking stars at the club, it is no wonder that he struggles for game time.

He is competing with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi. Whether all those players are still at the club next season only time will tell.

But if Pulisic does not see more action, his days at the Bridge might be numbered.
