Netherlands international Steven Berghuis feels Manchester United will be gaining an incredible manager if Erik ten Hag does join the club.
Ten Hag, 52, is now favourite to take the Old Trafford reins when Ralf Rangnick steps aside this summer, according to ESPN. The German has been in temporary charge of the Red Devils since December 2 after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But results and performances have been inconsistent.
Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Everton meaning they have taken just five points from five games. They are virtually out of the race for a Champions League spot, sitting seventh in the table on 51 points.
The next managerial appointment at the Theatre of Dreams will be crucial to the club’s future.
Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino was thought to be in the frame. But recent reports suggest Ajax chief Ten Hag is the man they will turn to.
Berghuis has worked under the former Utrecht chief this season after moving to Amsterdam from Feyenoord last summer. And it is obvious just how highly the former Watford winger rates his manager.
“I have not been with Ajax that long, but if you see what this manager has achieved with the squad for almost four-and-half years, it is incredible.
“Look at the average number of points and two Champions League campaigns. It is all so impressive. It will become a massive challenge for the new manager, but also for the club if he leaves.
“What you can see right now is that Ten Hag’s signature is all over this Ajax side.”
Berghuis a big fan of Ten Hag methods
It has been a tough campaign for Manchester United, with early exits in both the EFL Cup and FA Cup. They reached the last-16 of the Champions League before losing out to Atletico Madrid.
Questions have been raised as to the tactics and team spirit within the United camp this term. They have looked devoid of ideas at times, relying on individual brilliance over a solid tactical approach.
But Berghuis has revealed that his current boss leaves no stone unturned in his pursuit of excellence.
“The fact that I have been able to develop myself under Ten Hag in several positions is also satisfying,” he added. “I was regarded as nothing more than a right winger. But this manager has used my qualities in slightly different positions.
“The coach explains most of what he wants to tell his players on the basis of video material, both in the team analysis and also individually.
“Everyone receives an explanation about what is being asked and what this manager would like to see in each position.”
