Ascending West Ham ace thrown into intriguing dilemma as Newcastle chase him for one of three roles

Newcastle United are now competing for the transfer of West Ham United winger Jarrod Bowen as one of three potential attacking recruits, a report has revealed.

Jarrod Bowen is enjoying his best ever Premier League season with West Ham. So far in the 2021-22 campaign, he has scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists from 41 appearances across all competitions.

The winger is on the verge of a major breakthrough at international level with England. But by the time the national team is next in action, plenty should have been said about Bowen’s club future.

Regularly linked with Liverpool, Bowen has now become a target for Newcastle United, according to the latest from 90min.

Newcastle – whose manager Eddie Howe is a long-term admirer and has club scouts in agreement – have identified him as someone who can improve their attack for the next few seasons. They are aiming to evolve in the final third with one more centre-forward and two new wingers.

Bowen fits the latter category, and has proven himself to be a capable goal-getter from that territory. His potential arrival at St James’ Park would ease the burden on Allan Saint-Maximin – or even represent a succession plan after reports that the Frenchman could be sacrificed.

At the age of 25, Bowen is at an interesting point of his career. He could be ready for the next step after West Ham, but whether that ought to be Newcastle is another matter.

West Ham have been playing in Europe this season and want to get there again next term. Newcastle, on the other hand, will definitely not have that on offer immediately. Instead, they are working towards that territory over a medium-term plan.

But their financial muscle could prove tempting to a number of targets. During their first transfer window since their Saudi-backed takeover, they lured three players from Premier League rivals (Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Chris Wood), in addition to two from foreign leagues (Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier).

West Ham to respond with Jarrod Bowen contract plan

Going after Bowen would be one of their most ambitious moves yet. Besides, West Ham are working on a new contract for the former Hull City forward.

Currently on terms until 2025 at the London Stadium, Bowen is holding out for a salary to put him among the club’s highest earners if he is to extend with West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen, West Ham, April 2022.

His contract is therefore one of a number for West Ham to work on. Tomas Soucek and Ben Johnson are also in line for discussions in the summer, the report adds.

But Bowen feels he has the right to be among the very best paid in the group. Newcastle would be able to make him a big offer, so West Ham must respond in turn.

As for the business between the two clubs, it is not clear at this stage how much West Ham may seek for Bowen.

They are known to drive a hard bargain, as seen by their lofty valuation of Manchester United target Declan Rice. The figures for Bowen could be high themselves.

Having signed him for just less than £20m back in January 2020, it is likely they will make a decent profit. Preferable still would be to keep him for their own ambitions, though.
